What happened

On the evening of March 13, 1997, at around 7:30 p.m., Arizona residents began reporting a V-shaped formation of lights passing from the northwest over Prescott and the Phoenix valley toward Tucson. Some witnesses described a single gigantic, dark object blotting out the stars. At around 10:00 p.m. a row of bright, stationary orbs appeared over southwestern Phoenix; they were filmed by many cameras and blinked out one after another after a few minutes. In June, Governor Fife Symington called a press conference at which one of his aides appeared in an alien costume. In 2007 Symington admitted that he himself had seen something that evening that he could not explain.

Thousands of Arizona residents, including Governor Fife Symington, pilots, and amateur astronomers.

Explanations and hypotheses

The second phenomenon – the stationary orbs – was explained as illumination flares dropped by Maryland Air National Guard A-10 aircraft over the Barry Goldwater Range; from the city’s vantage point they set behind the mountains. Many researchers attribute the V formation to aircraft flying in formation. Some witnesses reject this explanation, insisting that they saw a single enormous object.

Disputed A likely explanation exists, but some of the facts are still disputed.
