What happened
On the evening of January 6, 1969, Jimmy Carter, then a peanut farmer and Lions Club member, was waiting with a dozen or so people outside a school building in Leary, where he was due to give a speech. At around 7:15 p.m. they saw a bright light in the western sky that seemed to approach and change brightness and color, then moved away and disappeared after about ten minutes. In 1973, by then governor of Georgia, Carter filled out a UFO sighting report form, getting the date wrong. During the 1976 presidential campaign he promised to release government UFO files, but after his election he did not return to the subject.
Witnesses
Jimmy Carter and about ten members of the Leary Lions Club.
Explanations and hypotheses
Researcher Robert Sheaffer established the correct date and showed that Venus was shining very brightly in that part of the sky at the time, which is considered the most likely explanation. Others mentioned a weather balloon. Carter himself later said he did not believe it was an alien spacecraft, only something he could not identify.
Explained The phenomenon has a widely accepted, down-to-earth explanation.
