What happened

On September 3, 1965, at around two in the morning, 18-year-old Norman Muscarello was hitchhiking along Route 150 in Kensington. Suddenly a huge, silent object with five bright red, pulsating lights appeared over a nearby farm and came within a few dozen meters of him. The frightened young man made it to the police station in Exeter, from where Officer Eugene Bertrand drove him back to the spot. Both saw a red object rise from behind the trees, rocking and lighting up the area. They were soon joined by Officer David Hunt. The sighting lasted several minutes. Journalist John G. Fuller described the case in his 1966 bestseller “Incident at Exeter.”

Witnesses

Norman Muscarello, police officers Eugene Bertrand and David Hunt; that same night several other residents reported similar lights.

Explanations and hypotheses

The Pentagon initially linked the sighting to the “Big Blast” air exercise and to atmospheric phenomena, but after the officers protested, Project Blue Book changed the classification to “unidentified.” Skeptics have proposed, among other things, military aircraft from nearby Pease Air Force Base, including aerial refueling tankers, or bright stars and planets. No explanation has been widely accepted.

Unexplained There is no convincing explanation.
