What happened
On the night of September 19–20, 1961, Betty and Barney Hill were driving home from Canada to Portsmouth. In the White Mountains they noticed a bright light that seemed to be following them. Near Indian Head, Barney stopped the car and through binoculars saw a flying craft with a row of windows, and behind them figures in uniforms. They fled in panic and arrived home two hours later than they should have. Betty later had nightmares about an abduction. In 1964 the couple underwent therapy with psychiatrist Benjamin Simon, who under hypnosis elicited accounts of a medical examination and a “star map” shown to Betty. The case was described in 1966 by John G. Fuller in the book “The Interrupted Journey.”
Witnesses
Betty and Barney Hill; Pease Air Force Base recorded an unidentified radar return that night, which is sometimes linked to their account.
Explanations and hypotheses
Dr. Simon himself believed that the abduction story grew out of Betty’s nightmares, which Barney had heard about many times, rather than from real events. Skeptics point out that the bright light may have been Jupiter and that the image of the beings resembles characters from a television series of the time. The star map has been interpreted as showing the Zeta Reticuli system, but the match is questionable. No one has seriously questioned the couple’s sincerity.
Disputed A likely explanation exists, but some of the facts are still disputed.
