What happened
Antônio Villas Boas, a 23-year-old farmer from near São Francisco de Sales, twice saw bright lights over a field in early October 1957. On the night of October 15–16, while plowing a field with his tractor, he saw an egg-shaped object land on three legs. The tractor’s engine died, and four short individuals in suits and helmets dragged him on board. There, he said, he was undressed, had blood drawn, and was placed in a room with a woman with fair hair and slanted eyes, with whom he had intercourse. After about four hours he was released, and the object flew away. In 1958 he was examined by physician Olavo Fontes, who noted skin lesions, among other things. He had been referred to Fontes by journalist João Martins, and the case gained wide publicity in the mid-1960s.
Witnesses
Antônio Villas Boas, the only witness to the abduction; his brother also saw the earlier lights over the field.
Explanations and hypotheses
Villas Boas, who later became a lawyer and died in 1991, stood by his story to the end. Skeptics note that the account was not recorded until several months later and that similar motifs appeared in the press and science fiction of the time. Physician Olavo Fontes found no signs of mental disorder. The case is regarded as the first widely documented abduction with a sexual element and a template for many later accounts.
Unexplained There is no convincing explanation.
