What happened
On the evening of September 27, 1989, a group of children playing soccer in West Park in Voronezh saw a pink glow in the sky and then a red sphere that descended over the trees. According to their account, a tall, roughly three-meter being with three eyes, in a silvery suit, emerged from the object, accompanied by a small robot. The visitor reportedly made one of the boys freeze in place, and after a short while the object flew away. Adult residents of the area also gave similar accounts. On October 9, 1989, the TASS news agency reported a UFO landing in Voronezh, causing a sensation around the world. Journalists and scientists came to the site, measuring radiation and describing marks on the ground.
Witnesses
Several children from Voronezh and, according to press reports, adult residents of the area as well; the witnesses’ names are not widely known.
Explanations and hypotheses
The Soviet scientists who examined the site did not unambiguously confirm traces of a landing. Skeptics regard the account as a childhood fantasy blown up by the press during glasnost, when the media eagerly took up previously taboo subjects. Supporters point to the number of witnesses and the official TASS report. The case remains a symbol of the wave of interest in UFOs in the final years of the USSR.
Disputed A likely explanation exists, but some of the facts are still disputed.
