Close encounters with beings
Astronomer J. Allen Hynek divided UFO sightings into kinds: the first is an object seen at close range, the second – physical traces, the third – beings associated with the object. Third-kind reports are the rarest and the most startling: witnesses describe short figures in suits, scorched marks on the ground and paralysis. They include the Polish case from Emilcin, considered one of the best documented in Europe.

1950–1959
- 1952 Flatwoods Monster Flatwoods, Braxton County, West Virginia, United States A group of residents went to check where a glowing object had come down and saw a three-meter figure with burning eyes on a hill.
- 1954 The Quarouble Railroad Encounter Quarouble near Valenciennes, Nord department, France In 1954, Marius Dewilde saw a dark object and two small figures in suits by the railroad tracks – during the great French UFO wave.
- 1955 Kelly–Hopkinsville Encounter Sutton farm in Kelly near Hopkinsville, Kentucky, United States Two families spent a whole night defending a farmhouse against small, silvery beings with glowing eyes, firing at them with shotguns.
- 1957 Levelland UFO Case Levelland, Texas, United States In a single night, a dozen or so drivers near Levelland reported a glowing egg on the road – and cars whose engines and headlights suddenly died.
- 1959 Father Gill and the Boianai UFO Anglican mission at Boianai, Milne Bay Province, Papua New Guinea In 1959, missionary William Gill and dozens of Papuans watched a glowing object with figures on board who waved back at them.

- 1961 Eagle River Pancakes Encounter Eagle River, Wisconsin, United States Plumber Joe Simonton claimed the crew of a silver saucer asked him for water and gave him four pancakes in return.
- 1964 Lonnie Zamora Incident (Socorro Landing) Socorro, New Mexico, United States Police officer Lonnie Zamora saw an egg-shaped object and two small figures in white coveralls in a gully – traces and scorched bushes were left behind.
- 1965 Valensole UFO Incident Valensole, Alpes-de-Haute-Provence department, France Farmer Maurice Masse said that at dawn an oval object landed in his lavender field and two small beings paralyzed him from a distance.
- 1967 Falcon Lake Incident Near Falcon Lake, Manitoba, Canada Prospector Stefan Michalak touched a landed object and was burned by a blast of hot gas – leaving a grid-like pattern of marks on his chest.

- 1970 Imjärvi Incident: The Skiers and the Being in Green Imjärvi near Heinola, Päijät-Häme region, Finland Two Finnish skiers said that in 1970 they encountered a glowing object in a mist and a short figure in a green suit in a forest near Heinola.
- 1974 Langenburg Saucer Nests Langenburg, Saskatchewan, Canada Farmer Edwin Fuhr saw five spinning domes over a canola field – after they left, rings of flattened vegetation remained.
- 1975 Kōfu Incident: The Boys and the Being in the Vineyard Kōfu, Yamanashi Prefecture, Japan Two Japanese boys said that in 1975 an orange object landed in a vineyard in Kōfu and a short, dark-skinned being emerged from it.
- 1978 Emilcin Abduction Emilcin near Opole Lubelskie, Lublin Province, Poland Farmer Jan Wolski said that in May 1978 two short beings took him aboard a craft hovering over a meadow and subjected him to an examination.
- 1979 Val Johnson Incident Highway near Stephen, Marshall County, Minnesota, United States Deputy Val Johnson’s patrol car was flooded with blinding light – the windshield cracked, the antenna bent, and the clocks ran slow.
- 1979 Robert Taylor Incident on Dechmont Law Dechmont Law near Livingston, West Lothian, United Kingdom Scottish forester Robert Taylor claimed that in 1979 spherical objects attacked him in a clearing – the police opened an assault investigation.

- 1980 Rendlesham Forest Incident Rendlesham Forest near RAF Woodbridge, Suffolk, United Kingdom In December 1980, U.S. airmen from a base in England saw glowing objects in a forest over several nights – a case dubbed “Britain’s Roswell.”
- 1980 Cash–Landrum Incident FM 1485 highway near Huffman, Texas, United States Two women and a boy saw a fire-spewing diamond over the road escorted by helicopters – and afterward fell seriously ill.
- 1981 Trans-en-Provence Landing Traces Trans-en-Provence, Var department, France In 1981, a resident of Provence saw an object land in his garden; the French agency GEPAN examined the traces and changes in the plants.
- 1988 The Knowles Family Encounter on the Nullarbor Plain Eyre Highway west of Mundrabilla, Western Australia, Australia A family driving across the Nullarbor Plain at night in 1988 claimed a glowing object chased their car and lifted it above the highway.
- 1989 Voronezh UFO Incident West Park, Voronezh, Russia In the fall of 1989, children in Voronezh told of a sphere landing in a park and tall three-eyed beings – a report carried by the TASS news agency.

- 1994 Ariel School UFO Incident Ariel School, Ruwa near Harare, Zimbabwe In 1994, more than sixty children at a school in Zimbabwe said they saw a silver object land during recess and figures in black outfits.
- 1996 Varginha UFO Incident Varginha, Minas Gerais state, Brazil In January 1996, three young women in Varginha described a strange creature with red eyes, and rumors spread that the military had captured such beings.
