What happened
On October 4, 1967, at around 11:20 p.m., residents of Shag Harbour at the southern tip of Nova Scotia saw four orange lights descend over the sea and plunge into the water with a flash a few hundred meters from shore. Several people notified the RCMP, assuming a plane had crashed. Fishermen and a Coast Guard cutter went out to the site. They found only a patch of thick, yellowish foam on the water and no one to rescue. No airport reported a missing aircraft. For several days Navy divers searched the sea but found nothing. The Canadian government classified the object as unidentified.
Witnesses
A dozen or so Shag Harbour residents, fishermen, RCMP Constable Ron Pound and other officers, the crew of a Coast Guard vessel.
Explanations and hypotheses
Official documents of the Canadian military and the RCMP refer to an unidentified object that fell into the water, which is a rarity in government records. Skeptics suggest a meteor or a flare, but this does not explain the foam on the water or the description of a slow descent. Ufologists claim the object moved underwater to the vicinity of a military base, but there are no documents to support this. Today the case is a tourist attraction in the region.
Unexplained There is no convincing explanation.
