What happened

Early in the morning of January 21, 1959, sailors and port workers in Gdynia reportedly saw a glowing object fall into one of the harbor basins. According to accounts cited in Polish UFO literature, divers searched the bottom, and a recovered piece of metal was examined by specialists from the Navy and a technical university. The press, the military, and the Polish Academy of Sciences took an interest in the case. Over time, the story acquired the element that made it famous: a few days later, a strange being with six fingers and six toes was supposedly found on the beach. It was said to have been taken to a military hospital, where it wasted away, and its body was allegedly shipped to the USSR. The tale is compared to Roswell and called the “Polish Roswell.”

Explanations and hypotheses

Scientists from the Polish Academy of Sciences concluded that what fell into the water was most likely a fragment of a meteorite. The story of the being is known only from accounts passed on years later, without documents or witnesses’ names, which is why researchers consider it an urban legend. Some sources even give a different date – February 21, 1959. The fall of the object itself has never received a documented, conclusive explanation.
