What happened
At about 1 a.m. on January 19, 2009, Adam Maksymów, a businessman from Jarnołtówek in the Opawskie Mountains, went outside to charge his car battery. He heard booms recurring every two to three minutes, resembling rocket launches, and a hum like the sound of a swarm of bees. The sky lit up with a powerful light, and a large dark object with a blue, triangular beam of light beneath it rose above the trees and vanished at tremendous speed after a few seconds. Other villagers spoke of a “huge saucer” over the forest, booms, and a sudden strong wind. The case was reported in August 2009 by “Nowa Trybuna Opolska,” followed by media in Poland and abroad.
Witnesses
Adam Maksymów and several other residents of Jarnołtówek who heard the booms or saw the light over the forest.
Explanations and hypotheses
No official explanation has been given. Maksymów himself considered an accident at a nearby mine or the landing of a military vertical takeoff aircraft such as a Harrier. There were reports that radars in Germany and the Czech Republic had tracked the object, but these were never confirmed. Researcher Janusz Zagórski found the account credible, and the Jarnołtówek area is known in Polish ufology for several similar reports.
Unexplained There is no convincing explanation.
